But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes.” (Matthew 22:11 NIV)
In this parable of Jesus, we see a king who is throwing a wedding banquet for his son. The invited guests wouldn’t attend, so the king invited whoever was hanging around the street and market to come, good and bad alike. Why single out this one guy for not wearing a suit?
Apparently everyone else tried to look their best, regardless of quality. But here was a guy that didn’t care or even try. Had he at least tried to do what was right and expected, grace would allow him to stay. Effort brings grace.
We serve a God of great grace, willing to tolerate much from us. But it is our obligation to try to live right and desire holiness; God already did His part at the Cross. Come to church tomorrow with your “wedding clothes” on, hungry to celebrate the King’s Son! Grace looks really good on you! You are loved! (3/1/14)
