I am writing to God’s chosen people who are living as foreigners in the provinces…” (1 Peter 1:1 NLT)
One of my favorite books is a collection of missionary biographies, From Jerusalem To Irian Jaya. It narrates their life stories, even the hard and not-so-stellar moments they encountered. As I read about their calling, their choice to sacrifice an easier life here for harsher conditions abroad, I am awed by their allegiance to God over lesser, selfish desires.
When Peter was writing, he was addressing the believers that had moved on to other places due to persecution by the Romans, a time called the Diaspora. While moving away to save their lives and find new homes and jobs, God would use these people as the first missionaries to travel onto foreign fields. Wherever they went, they took the gospel message of Jesus, seeking lives that could be changed just like theirs was.
As life sometimes takes you into various places, take a page from the Early Church playbook by becoming a missionary in your own field. Take time today to say a prayer for missionaries you may know, modern-day heroes that have left everything to help change our world for the better. With everyone doing their part, we’ll make this world a better place to live! You are loved today!
