I remember how eager you were to please me as a young bride long ago, how you loved me and followed me even through the barren wilderness.” (Jeremiah 2:2 NLT)
As my wife and I drank coffee together this morning, she reminded me that we first met 23 years ago back in July. Ever since that day and our subsequent marriage 2 years later, she has followed me around two states and several churches as we’ve ministered together to some wonderful people and endured some not-so-wonderful situations. And she only did it to please God and support her husband.
When we first start the Christ Life, we enjoy the honeymoon phase of learning the ropes and meeting others in the family of faith. But as with other relationships, it’s easy to get in a lull, become bored, and lean towards unfaithfulness as we occupy our time with other selfish pursuits. Then we wake up one day and realize we’ve drifted far afield, hearing God make these same “I miss you” statements towards us.
If you feel the yearnings to come back, don’t be defensive or dismissive. God longs to be with you. He’s a better judge of your faithfulness and eagerness than you are. Listen, return, and stay in a state of incredible relationship with a Savior that loves you more than anyone else! Enjoy His presence today!
