My old self has been crucified with Christ.” (Galatians‬ ‭2‬:‭20‬ NLT)

According to David Farabee, a research psychologist at the University of California, we have a criminal rehab problem in America. Each year, some 600,000 criminals are released back into society. Yet, 70% of all criminals are re-arrested within 3 years of their release from prison. While there are some faith-based programs that do have much higher success rates, they only impact a trivial amount of this group. So how do we decriminalize criminals?

We face the same issue in the Christ Life. The mark of a true believer is a changed life. The hardest part of spiritual discipline, though, is the changing of our nature. We can’t keep living the same bad life yet proclaim that God saved us! It’s more than losing our guilt, it’s about losing our old life in order to gain a new one!

Spiritual recidivism, just like criminal recidivism, means I’ve invested some time towards change but haven’t allowed myself to change. We can’t change ourselves, only God can do that. Ask God today, and everyday, to be changing you, helping you to have discipline to say “No” and a desire to accept a new way of living. Your life was made for better things! Choose to live it! You are loved today!
