Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly.” (James‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬ NLT)

A few years ago I was reading a newspaper article about an ordination group that a reporter was investigating. Turns out that for $100, you could be become an ordained minister through their group, even receive a religious doctorate degree! So he sent in the money and signed his cat’s name to it, just to see if it worked. Sure enough, Whiskers became the Reverend Doctor Whiskers overnight! Sad, but true.

But a piece of paper does not a minister make. Just as some people fail at being a chef, a teacher, or a beautician, some fail at ministry too, simply because they went after it for the wrong reason. The ministry is a wonderful calling, but it’s a path filled with a lot of hard work, frustration, and responsibility. In the end, we are accountable to God for what we did with our calling.

As today is National Pastors Appreciation Day, be sure to let your Pastors know that you are grateful for what they do. If you are a Pastor, don’t stop being God’s gracious hand to His own needy people. And if you feel called to minister, let a Pastor lead you to a better-than-mail order way to Shepherding! You are loved today! See you at church!
