“But if you fail to keep your word, then you will have sinned against the LORD, and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.” (Numbers‬ ‭32‬:‭23‬ NLT)

At just 19 years old, William Henry McCarty Jr., aka William Bonney, aka “Billy the Kid,” had already achieved national infamy as one of the most well-known outlaws of the day. But by 1878, tired of his life of crime, he allegedly wrote to the newly appointed governor of New Mexico, Lew Wallace, that he was tired of fighting.

Wallace responded with an immunity deal if Billy would testify against others in the infamous Lincoln County War, a personal mission of the governor. Billy’s testimony led to some 50 arrests! Yet, Wallace refused to pardon him, as was promised. Thus, Billy escaped from jail, resuming a rampage of crime and murders. It leaves one to think, what would’ve happened had Wallace kept his word?

When you don’t keep your word, everyone pays a price. So be a person of your word! Whether to God or another person, do what you obligate yourself to, even if it hurts. If not, it will hurt worse! You are loved! Do right!

You have armed me with strength for the battle.” (Psalms‬ ‭18‬:‭39‬ NLT)

German Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer courageously took a very unpopular stand against Jewish persecution by the Nazis, which was being supported by the state church. By bravely breaking away, he created a new group called the “Confessing Church” and led an ‘illegal’ seminary. Because of his passionate resistance, he was eventually arrested and executed on April 9, 1945, merely five months before the war ended.

The only way Bonhoeffer could’ve faced his circumstances was by what the psalmist describes: “You have armed me with strength for the battle.” God gives each of us the measure of courage and faith that we need to plow ahead, regardless of our obstacles. While we focus so heavily on our chances for failure, we also forget that we have just as great a chance to succeed when it’s what God desires!

Courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to operate in the face of it. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do. If God is with you, then don’t worry about what might happen. Nothing you do in obedience to God is ever a waste! You are loved today! Go get ’em!

When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.” (Ecclesiastes 5:4 NIV)

According to the Center for Disease Control, divorces surpassed the 50% mark of marriages last year. As I performed a wedding last week for a family member, I’m reminded of how sacred our vows are to God, more so than they are to ourselves. While I’m pretty confident in their marital future, there are plenty I’m not so sure of.

Consider for a moment your REAL track record for keeping your promises. How many times to we make pledges and promises? Are we faithful to fulfill them? Do people know you as a person of your word, even if it hurts? Does God see you that way? It’s hard to judge ourselves, but if we don’t keep our word, the only person we fool is ourselves.

Be a person of your word. When you make a vow to God or before Him to others, always live up to it. The remainder of blessing for your life hinges upon your faithfulness. Live up to your end of the bargain with everyone! You are loved today!
